14 bands for 2014

I just thought I'd do a post about some new/ old and current bands that I have recently been listening to and discovered this year. A lot of these you may have heard of, but I'd just like to draw a close attention to them and who they are. This is also a chance for me to suggest some bands for you to listen to maybe and check out as this year they are going to be becoming more prominent and strong.

1. First up is ROAM, a pop punk band from Brighton/Eastbourne made up of five very young and talented members and great friends.

Starting out in 2012, the band have not actually been around for that long considering how far they have come, yet they still give off such a high, professional and fresh new sound to the UK's pop punk scene. Already being on tour with Neck Deep, Moose Blood and supporting Man Overboard, it's safe to say that their talent has already been recognized by some of the finest sounding bands the UK as well as the US have to offer. At such a young start, the band have delved right into the music industry releasing two solid EP's: No Common Ground and Head Down (Listen for free here) which have already blown many fans away. If you like any sort of pop punk music I'd highly recommend them for you as 2014 seems like a pretty good year for them, also announced to play FURY FEST in May!

2. Second up, Moose Blood who are an emo, indie, alternative band from Canterbury who would describe themselves as "Four friends drinking coffee and writing songs" which is a pretty accurate description. Another new band who hasn't been around for long, starting off late in 2012, recording their brilliantly titles EP: Moving Home (Listen for free) the band have already draw such a large dedicated fan base. Doing a short tour for their EP release, with Roam and Zoax the band also occasionally play small coffee shops and pubs in the local areas, so make sure you get down and catch them in a town near you. With such a pretty and unique sound they provide contemporary emo punk music is lyrically genius with its close reference to other bands and Films which i'm sure you'll get.
You can listen to more of their music for free here: Moose Blood.

3. Elegies who were previously known as A Season of Secrets, are a six pieced hardcore/ metalcore band from Sheffield who have recently revamped their name due to the change in genre they have taken. Previously their work has been solid and proved to shown constant talent, however with the name change it has seemed to step up their level of sound to a whole new round, proving how talented and beautiful they can compose music together. Usually have a clean vocalist and a screamer jut sounds very generic and boring, however Elegies have a similar structure yet they harmonies perfectly, creating a rough edge to their music, setting it apart from any other band.
I just feel like Sheffield has so many great new and upcoming bands around who are constantly going un recognized with an unknown knowledge of who they are and what they sound like, yet they are producing the UK's finest hardcore bands out there right now.
Been around for a only a few months now as Elegies they seem to be doing well as playing all the local venues in town for a small crowd, building their way up to major tours. I'm sure you would love to see them visit your hometown, so spread the word and check them out, as they have already been announced to play Skinfest in April with Giants and Crooks!
As well as Tek-One, supporting many local bands, Elegies are producing strong, raw music which is sure going to be surrounding your ears soon. (Listen to a new track: Scars)

4. Zoax are a hard rock, punk rock band from London city, made up of 5 different lads from all different directions of the UK. Already mentioning them as previous touring with Moose Blood and Roam they have some major support sets announced all throughout 2014, with the likes of Polar and Funeral For A Friend, they have already kick started their music carer off with a bang! Already seem them live, I know for sure they put on one hell of a performance, aggressively letting off all steam with a packed room full of equally energetic people. I doesn't matter what genre you like as most of these combined with each other and interlinked as a new sounding band as Zoax were really interesting to hear as immediately I knew I liked them. Rekindling previous rock music, they have brought a sense of nostalgia to a whole new decade, which makes me happy that this kind of music is still alive, as so it should be the band does it justice. (Free listen: Bitter Angry Fake)

5. A Midwest indie/emo punk band called Dowsing from Chicago (the first of our American bands) forming in 2010, the quintet differs from most band as there is actually a female keyboardist. Further making them unique, they come across as a very quirky vibrant band who just make happy music which you can sit back and relax to. Similar to bands such as American Football, turnover, and all of them indie emo bands American has to offer, they provide a stable separation from the generic sound to a distinctive trade mark they leave within in their songs. (Music) Already progressing far they have a few albums released along with the odd EP, each one different from the other yet keeping their original sound clear. Not yet reaching the UK with any tour dates they have covered the US, playing regular shows for regular fans.

6. Another Chicago suburb band is Knuckle Puck who take on a more punk, pop punk genre forming early in 2012, they have released two mini albums along with an acoustic and a recent Split with UK's pop punk band Neck Deep: SPLIT. Also sharing a friendly relationship with Neck Deep, they are supporting them on their US tour, play shows all around America, they are known to be sweethearts. No news as to a UK tour yet, The band have captured my attention imminently giving off close relation to Turnover, Real Friends, and Misser they produce a strong solid pop punk vibe which carry's across a large crowd. Not being very well known in the UK, I feel they need way more attention which they deserve, as there is already a massive crowd for them waiting to hear their music.( album listen )

7. Have Mercy are a four piece alternative indie band from Baltimore, MD who started to form in  late 2010 but only really became active in realizing music in 2012. Not that long ago this new American band have covered the basic indie genre well by also overlapping with some aspects of emo punk which you will find to sound similar to many other bands. The thing that sticks out the most about them is their sound. Not even looking at their genre, it was hard to identity as they seem to convey such a mixed message of sounds which come together just he perfectly, resting on ever last syllable.
With a free EP to listen to here, titled My Oldest Friend the band have a very stern and flawless sound that can spread to be liked within a large audience, don't take my word for it, check them out and tell me exactly what you think? Currently on tour with Major League
, and also set out to play more local shows all across America, it's just a moment of time before they realise the UK wants to hear a piece of them!

8. Keeping in touch with the west side of the world another band labelled William Bonney from The Midwest, who say to be inspired by the Devil bring us some of the more niche and unique sound of emo, heavy dead boner music, described best by the band. Starting out in 2010 with just four strong members the band have recently just broken up towards the end of 2013 not quite making it to 2014, despite of this I still feel that old bands are still important to music and should be valued as much as existing bands, with the right set of phrase given to what they have accomplished in the three years they were together.
If you want to listen to any of their music they have an album free to stream called "Good Vibes" here .
The best way I would describe them is sounding a lot like La Dispute and slightly like Touche Amore. If you like any of that style of music with deep emotional lyrics that scream and sing and talk all in one go, followed by a neat and intricate instrumental backing, then I'd highly recommend
you give them a listen for old time's sake at least.

9. Now I know that Giants are getting pretty big and have a lot of existing fans, but I decided to add them to my list because not many have heard of them or actually know they exists. Essex/ London's finest Skatepunk/ Hardcore band consist of five very well grown and talented members who certainly do know how to put on a show. With such a hybrid and unique genre, this band have striked me to stand out the most in 2014 producing such a varied range of music, with an outstanding album of These Are The Days containing a mixture of hardcore tracks with a skatepunk beat. My favourite being from their Double A Side 7" Misguided  proved to capture this all in one song. Already doing their own headline tour which has just finished along with Black Shapes, Elegies and Broke State, the band have also been announced to sub headline Skin Fest in April 2014, which is a huge deal for them! Giants are always out and on the road touring with the UK's finest hardcore bands such as Your Demise, Dead Harts, Napoleon, TRC, so add them to your next gig list!

10. Midland Texas brings us Ivy League formed in 2009 and made up of just three strong members, who produce punk and pop punk music. America as seen to grasps this genre perfectly, flawing out this solid sound that suits them well. If you like Basement, Citizen, Make Do And Mend or Title Fight then be sure to give them a listen: HERE .
Personally I get a more emo, punk feel to their hard hitting edgy music as they remind me a lot of Basement vocally as well as Make Do And Mend, they seem to have a close corresponding relationship with these bands, sharing similar sounds. Not really being known in the UK or heard of, I highly recommend you give them a listen or a like on facebook, bringing their sound worldwide.

11. You Blew It! an emo punk band from Orlando, FL, made up from four guys who sound a bit like: this. They all share a love for American Football, The Get Up Kids and Algernon Cadwallader. Defiantly worth checking out if you like this kind of genre as they would also describe them self as 1999 music. One of the first American bands who are coming down to the UK for a tour with Real Fiends and Modern Baseball in May, so no excuse not to check them out! Not actually being that known, they convey the simple sounding genre which most bands are banging on about in 2014 and 2013 as emo punk is slowly dominating. They have a few albums here and there with the off EP to listen to for free on their facebook!

12. Taking a trip back to Sheffield again, we have a very young band called Broken State who produce hardcore/ metalcore music from their known town of Sheffield. The five piece band are always playing local shows in the area as I have attended
a few, always enjoying myself when they're on.
Joining the music world in mid 2013, they actually have not been around for long, yet they put on energetic live bouncy music which shows off their true talent. Inspired by Your Demise, Being As An Ocean, Giants, While She Sleeps and Counterparts, the band certainly do have a great taste in music as well as performing it. If you're ever in the local area then be sure to catch them playing as they are always up for a gig and having fun. Supported the likes of Elegies, Tek-one, Black Dogs and Giants! Free listen

13. Only being a two piece indie, punk, emo band Dads from Piscataway NJ show some unique talent with their blend of melody and rhythm that sooth your mood in their calm, relaxing sound, they're just a duet who make beautiful music. Listen to it: Here for free. Being around since 2010 the band have been on many tours with small bands all over America and even the UK in November 2013, with the likes of "The World Is A Beautiful Place And I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, Pity Sex, and Daylight.
Make sure you give them a listen at least and check out their page as not being widely known in the UK, they sure d have a lot of fans to make up for.

14. The last of the 14 lot is a band all the way from California, formed in 2010, Worthwhile consist of five young talented members. Producing rough Edgy hardcore/ Metalcore music, the band have caught my eye out of the majority of others, they stick to my ears. Only recently hearing of them, their music reminds me a lot of Touche Amore and Being As An Ocean in certain aspects as vocally wise they add their own twist, but if you like any of these bands then i'm almost certain that you'll like Worthwhile as they are worth a listen! (HERE)
Blessed with instrumental talent of a high class and range, they produce amazing riffs, with solo intros that are beautifully intertwined that make up each song individually.

I hope to add more bands to this list but so far I have just gathered a rough 14 which I have come across this year and last who have stuck out from the rest, some being very well known while other are just getting there. Check them all out, as each one are talented in their own way, and producing brilliant music for such a young age. Enough of my thoughts now, I'd love to hear what you think about them, so drop a comment or get in touch!
