Top 10 Splits of 2014

1. Tiny Moving Parts / Old Gray
Tiny Moving Parts open up this split with ‘Swimming Lessons’ a track that is filled with mixed emotions of pain and relief. Vocally this song is strong in its tiny detail applied to pitches from screaming to spoken work to slightly singing happily. Lyrically the upbeat track follows on with Old Gray’s ‘Fair Trade’, adding to the pleasant split.
Twined with a beautifully composed melody, the track is even balanced with firm vocals and a haunting tune that gives more than enough rage to listen to. Working together the two songs deliver a flawless split, marking it to be the best of 2014.
2. Atlas / In Arms
Taking a hold of all senses, Atlas pop out ‘Know Hope’ as the first track on the split with high hopes. A short intro carries to tightly packed vocals that explode with every lyric sung, this track builds up tension for follow up songs yet to come.
Two of the finest northern bands have come together to produce a mesmerising split that explores astonishing talent. In Arms follow, wrapping up the latter end with two jaw snapping tracks. Exiting with ‘Asphyxia’ a heavily melodic piece, In Arms leave the split with a highly valued rank.
3. Bloody Knees / Birdskulls
A perfectly collaborative piece by two bands producing cutting edge bassed riffs.
Bloody Knees take to the stand with ‘Bones’ that lets out a rage of passionate clatters of drum snares and bashful movement, pumping all remaining adrenaline around your body to bounce around to. ‘Bed Tomb’ has a similar effect however with it’s memorable lyrics that are somehow relatable “I FEEL DEAD, JUST WANNA GET BACK IN BED” seem to relate to me most days.
Birdskulls are the joined band, involved within this split who send off a dated noise, that is easily enjoyed in a calming atmosphere.
4. Whirr / Nothing 12”
Evenly balanced with affectional gradients, Whirr introduce the split with two prime tracks, ‘Ease’ proving to be my favourite regardless. A bold instrumental sound is dominated within the trop starter tracks as light vocals touch on at each point just to add texture as the track develops into a tranquil aura.
Nothing then chin in ‘Chloroform’ that takes a step up in sound, almost blasting their sound into your ears, for you to absorb fully. Ending the split with a barbed grungy feel, that you can just lay back to and enjoy.
5. Xibalba / Suburban Scum
Delving into a deeper route, two solid bands in hardcore team up to release a split compacted with some of the nastiest of chills. Xibalba take off with ‘Death Threat’ that certainly does give you it’s titled vibes as the intro kicks into a gnarly twist. Plunging first first with punches of attacking stabbings, the track paces its self at top speed with its thrashing metal aura.
Suburban Scum follow through with a whole track dedicated to it’s into, it sets the scene for the next two followups. ‘Refuse To Suffer’ climates the tension raised, till reaching boiling point, before unleashing it’s guts everywhere.
6. Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) / Joie De Vivre 7”
Empire! Empire! start off this split with their bluesy whispers, enveloped by texturing swirls of sounds. Such a soothing and eased piece of music to listen to, this split explores chilled and laid out vibes that carry you on a tranquil journey. Joie De Vivre, carry on this theme with two more tracks that compliment the last. A very close match of brass instruments, matched by doubled vocals end ‘April, 2009’.
7. Adventures/ Pity Sex 7”
Adventures juxtapose their sounds within this split, with their first track sinking us in, matched by their heavier toned drop in ‘Behind This Wall’ cover, exploding in sounds on a blank canvas. Pity Sex, mild everything down with ‘Acid Reflex’ intwined with intricate guitar solo breaks and softly touching vocals. Each band have ended with a cover to tie the split together, promoting their abilities. The Pixies cover of ‘Gigantic’ solid flows to an end, generating a blasting split.
8. Small Brown Bike / The Casket Lottery 12”
With three songs to share each, Small Brown Bike and The Casket Lottery team up to produce six ravishing songs. Punchy and fast paced, opening track ‘Wrong Hometown’ begins with a rugged bass line, soon joined by steady vocals. Shouting and raging chats are muddled with the bashful outbreak of music being beamed out of this split.
Closing with the latter end of the split, a crying outbreak of noises shatter the atmosphere with powerful vocals that are matched up with heavily packed guitar riffs.
9. Soul Search/Minus
Soul Search produce the longest track on this split with ‘Price of Freedom’ building yo with a skin crawling gradual buildup of breakdown that eventually developed with sharp grasping vocals. The track fills just enough bashful bitterness for the whole split, which then builds onto Minus’s side with ‘Shackled’. Throat shredded vocals bas out with a bruised listen followed up by ‘The Difference’ which contains enough passion to convince the whole split to be excelling brutal and impacting.
10. We Never Learned To Live / Human Future
An oddly played out split here comes with one track from We Never Learned To Live, grasping our senses with ‘Marionettes’. Wasting no time in the intro, crashing preaches of vocals storm in, broken with each line spat at, the track continuous to build up tension held back in the guitars. Lengthily in time, this goes unrecognised due to its captivating structure which builds onto Human Future’s two tracks. Ending the split with ‘Missionary’, both bands have contributed equally to produce such a solid standing split that truly sums up an end of another year.

TOP 20 Singles of 2014

1. Architects - ‘Naysayer'
No doubt that Architects have produced an astounding track that highlights their talent of 2014. Also escaping from an impeccable album, ‘Naysayer’ has to be the top song of the year. Scaring the shit out of you with Carter’s penetrating vocals, the single opens up a whole new world of noise to us. Finding myself repeating this track almost every day and never getting sick, it holds great stability lyrically as well as instrumentally with stainless riffs that are filthy in all the cleaned places, you just can’t get enough of this band. It is safe to say that, Architects have in fact been the band of 2014, with Lost Forever // Lost Together dominating this years music.

2. Far From Home - ’30.11.06 (The Pain Of Reality)’
Sheffield bands really seem to be dominating the melodic hardcore scene with a new addition with Far From Home, their single ‘30.11.06 (The Pain Of Reality)’ is top on my list. (Despite staying in the shaddows) Right from the very start of the slowly developing track you know it’s going to hit you in the face. Sharp yet accurate pricking vocals are spat out, each line packed with emotive screams that seem to echo in your mind.
Instrumentally FFH have got it on point once again, producing soft styles that are heavily strong in sound, floating between the vocal pitches, this track is just faultless, jus a shame theres not more.

3. Milk teeth - ‘VITAMINS’
From start to finish this track leaves the mind with no room to ponder as Becky’s grungy vocals sweep in taking hold of a tense noise. ‘Vitamins’ holds strong as one of the best singles of 2014 due to its focus on her sweet acid sound while the melody compliments it. A track that screams “PLAY ME LIVE” is certainly the vibe given of with this single as it’s simply lyrically form is so complexed in sound that you find yourself replaying the song over and over again, without even realising.

4. Enter Shikari - ‘The Last Garrison’
When it comes to Shikari, they really don’t settle for anything less than radiant. With the teaser of ‘The Last Garrison released, it has sure got everyone hyped over their new album, discharged next year. With an inviting intro that imminently crashes into an outbreak, Shikari style, ‘The Last Garrison’ diverts itself to a  vibrant chorus that is forever catchy, leaving you with memorable words. Over joyed with explosions of sounds pocketed everywhere, the track takes rocky paths that keep you alive and roaming.

5. Stick To Your Guns - ‘Nobody’
If you’re into gnarly bass lines then Stick To Your Guns are your band, with the release of ‘Nobody’ a tremendous vibration of strings bouncing take a hold of your before Barnett’s vocals come swimming in adding an extra kick in the teeth. Keeping in tie with their positive outlook, this song reflects everything that is rebellion and never giving up which is hard to master without sounding tacky, however the band have grasped exactly this with hardcore beats that rage inner thoughts breaking loose from the world and going mad to. ‘Nobody’ has to be one of the songs that you put on repeat and never get bored of.

6. Roam - ‘Warning Sign’
A sneak peak from the new EP yet to be released, the ROAM guys are back with an intriguing track of ‘Warning Sign’. Just like their pervious work, this song captures their natural melodic talent, by polishing it ever so slightly, caked with advanced vocals which have clearly progressed with great strength. You wouldn't expect anything other than an ecstatic tune from these guys as always keeping you flying high on your toes, ROAM have yet again created another upbeat song that’s moderately improved.

7. Trash Boat - ‘Boneless’
Trash Boat are back again, sneaking back in with their single release of ‘Boneless’ which prances at you with all kinda of sounds. Diving head first into the track with vocals that are soon then joined by a short instrumental break filled with energetic rhythms and hooking lyrics which are closely relatable.
Defiantly one of the best pop punk songs of 2014, Trash Boat have managed to conjure up noises to fit into one song that stands out from the crowd most successfully.

8. Zoax - ‘Lonely Souls’
Unlike a mainstream rock band, Zoax have emerged through this foggy generic cycle with a whole new twist, releasing ‘Lonely Souls’. By adding a soothing soul melody which is sharply contrasted by Adam Carroll’s howling vocals, the single thrives to keep hold of your ears, right to the very end. Completely different from anything you’ve heard in a long time, this song captures their strongest sound so far, if not their best. Ending the constant switch from the two tones produced, ‘Lonely Souls’ is a downright banger.

9. Marmozets - ‘Captivate you’
Something a little less Marmozet and a little more subltle, which is exactly what ‘Captivates You’ does. From such an amazing album, an this underrated single shines through for me exploring the many twists and patterns this band can create. Straying slightly to the side from their typical structure, the track really pushes forth a deeper feeling that actually captivated me (ironic). Opposite to it’s competitor ‘Why Do You Hate Me’ which still stands strong, Becca MacIntyre’s vocals here are highlighted to centre spotlight.

10. Astroid Boys - ‘Dusted’
The boys are back with an even catchier track ‘Dusted’ which expands on their previous work from Beacon Dream.
Still layered with unorthodox turns, this track is backed up with a hard hitting hardcore riff plastered in the background which still remains focus while rapping bars are highlighted on top. Forward in their lyrics, Astroid Boys have continued to remain their highly granted standard with pacing verses that build up before breaking down into scattered noises, this track extended dominates all others. Not an expected single, but nevertheless one highly valued.

11. While She Sleeps - ‘New World Torture’
Ghosting for a year, Sleeps are back and better than ever with ‘New World Torture’ sweeping in just before the new year. Keeping Lawrence’s voice no secret, his even more battering vocals are screamed from the very start, backed up by injecting guitar riffs and heavy bass lines. Just like any sleeps song, this track is playful in texture with it’s change of paths that give off new experiences, Sleeps have teased us with their new mastered sound that does set our minds at ease.

12. Jamie T - ‘Zombie’
A single which I really wanted to rank much higher up on the ladder, however ‘Zombie’ makes a grand appearance, just in time for halloween, sweeping you with its high noted trance. With the release of a new album, Jamie T has produce an outstanding track which gets you jumping around your room sining along to every lyric. Animated this song holds strong against everything else as a bit of fun on the side, certainly a highlight of 2014.

13. The Ghost Inside - ‘Avalanche’
From the moment this was released, we all knew it was going to be a tune.
What really got me was the intro, taking a steady drum beat as you let yourself sink into Vigil’s outraged expression. Fast paced and taking over, ‘Avalanche’ has planned its journey in advanced with a clearly structured path, the track progresses with echoed gangs of vocals that disperse into the atmosphere, leaving you with a true TGI trademark.

14. Aaron West & The Roaring Twenties- ‘You Ain’t no Saint’
Soupy aka Aaron West going solo is something that we all deeply wanted to hear, and with this actually happening, ‘You Ain’t no Saint’ surly captures my feels.
Carrying on with a TWY vibe, AW&TRT starts this track off slowly, building up rhythm and sounds as they soon get compacted together growing towards the latter end of the track where it all comes crashing together.
A certain memorable feel is shot through your body when listening to this track as it’s contentment sweeps over nostalgic reactions.

15.Lower Than Atlantis - ‘Here We Go’
Despite a disappointing album LTA still have one banger, released as a single ‘Here We Go’ really does get my jam on. Body a strong to solidify 2014, the lads have packed up a funky bass riffs that is edgy in all the right strums, amplifying waves of vibration. Really taking a step up in their music ability, the track shows off all effort, displaying Duce’s vocals to be strong as well as the bands step up in tone.

16. Don Broco - ‘Money Power Fame’
With a surprisingly similar intro to LTA’s single, Don Broco have returned with an equally as raving track that gets you off your cold feet and into the winter air.
‘Money Power Fame’ is a song that you can’t help but like with its funky groves that twist in all kinds of directions and sharp pronouncing vocals, this track stands strong in my top 20 purely on its contagious noise.

17. Title Fight - ‘Chlorine’
With the much anticipated wait for Title Fight’s new album Hyperview to be released next year, ‘Chlorine’ was released as a taster just a few months before.
Mellowed in touch the band have produced a strong sound which releases my body from all the tension built up. Totally chilled out and swayey, this track is heavily built to focus on its instrumentals with the dominance on the guitar strains.

18. Fall Out Boy - ‘Centuries’
A single which I found myself liking a little too much, more than I even wanted to admit. Straight from the first air play, I knew this song would be playing 24/7 with it’s indignation presence you just couldn’t escape. With time this track grew highly on me, being a massive fan of the band I wasn’t too keen on their lateness album, however this track just modifies all of that. From the band I used to know, FOB have progressed and adapted to a modern wave of music, fitting right in with ‘Centuries’ being shockingly great.

19. Darlia - ‘Stars Are Aligned’
Newcomers, Darlia have banged out a bashful single ‘Stars Are Aligned’ right away. Wasting no time to get conferrable the trio from Blackpool have mastered a perfect piece of music. With grunge tones soaking in all interference, a certain charismatic aura is given off as the track progresses. Maybe not your cup of tea, but it’s surely a track that you are compelled to like.

20. OUTLIER  - ‘Bridges’

Jumping beats bounce out of your speakers and into your ears with the intro of Outlier’s ‘Bridges’ single as it proves to be a banger right from the start. Taking a step up into even dirtier curves the track progresses deeper in tones while still keeping their catchy inflection. Vocally firm in just the right amount of bitterness, these guys have produced a winning single that unfolds just enough for you to get excited for an EP.

Interview with Dan Brown - (Guitarist) The Amity Affliction

THE AMITY AFFLICTION were finishing up the last date of the UK tour at o2 Academy Islington, London after being on the road for some time now, the quartet have had their fair share of stories to tell from this journey. Dan Brown, guitarist of the band had some time to sit down and answer a few questions about the band.

Hello Dan, so how are you?
“I’m good today, I’ve been a little bit sick but we all got sick. We’ve got today, then we’ve got four shows left back in Europe.”

Have you even played in O2 Islington before?
“No, we haven’t, well I haven't. It looks cool, we just did the meet and greet out there with a few kids and its big and got a cool balcony. We did a sound check before and it sounds good so looking forward to it.”

Who would you want to go on tour with?
“Theres a few I would want to go on tour with, obviously Architects, they're our good friends but there is a few I guess that wouldn't suit our bill. Me and Joel, we’re all hardcore kids, growing up  with that stuff and we’re not really a hardcore band but I guess whatever you want to call it, full of hardcore kids so we’d basically want to be on tour with hardcore bands. One of my favourites are from Belgium I think, Rise And Fall, they’re like an older band but really good. As soon as we have the offers come up, Joel said we could take Rise And Fall, but we can’t because it just wouldn't make sense.”

What are your favourite venues around the UK?
“It’s hard to remember them all, cause its like a whirl wind, The Underworld was a good venue, I really liked that one. There's no barrier and it had all the different levels to it so there was crowds here and there. Paris was cool, last time we were there we played on a boat.”

Things you Love/ hate about the UK?
“Me and Ahren  will always go to get a kababs and chips, that's the main thing, as soon as we get here we want to eat that. It’s usually food. We’ve got an American playing guitar for us now, he's filling in and we get to take him out, we had fish and chips and roast dinners, he doesn’t have that in america. Australia is pretty similar so we just take him around.”

Are you going to get anyone to fill in for Troy Brady?
“There is Kyle who was our guitar tech, he’s a good guy and knows how to play guitar and he's just filling in presently now, he's not a member but he's going to be in that spot the whole time.”

There has been a lot of controversy about the Chasing Ghost album, artwork, what is the meaning?
“Well if you only look at the front cover then you would assume but if you flick through the booklet its actually not, its more of a metaphor, Joel goes with these lyrics, its all about being in the ocean and being cleansed and you come out the other end. We all talk about the album work, but Joel gets the concept. He writes all the lyrics. The answer phone message ain’t real, we wrote the script for it, the guitarist in Deez Nuts said it, and figured he's got a cool accent so we asked him. Because it ties the two songs together. We knew we had a happy song, then the repack after was heavy and if we just went from one to the other it would sound a bit odd so we needed something to tie it together, and him talking about it was brining both the lyrics and meaning.”

How do you feel about having such a large and supporting fanbase?
“Yeah that’s great, its mainly Joel and his lyrics, because he's been through the same thing when younger, and he wants to help and tell people that it’s alright and just stick with it. Everywhere we go we get people saying, oh you helped my friend or you helped me, its weird but its good.”

Would you ever change the sound of your band to fit into Hardcore?
“No, we also like metalcore, we like the stuff we play and its working for us so we wouldn't change, it’s gotten a little bit heavier, Ive started writing songs with Ahren so the sound has changed, just a little bit. But we would never be a hardcore band, we’d loose a lot of fans probably.”

What does 2015 hold?
“We’re full, we’ve got touring and writing new things, there is a lot of stuff we cant announce yet but it is a full year. We will be writing for a new album, it depends when we get it done to record it.”

Goals for the band’s future?
“Keep going the way we are going, as soon as we start going backwards we will start asking ourselves why we doing this, its cool at the moment, it pays us enough to be the only thing we do. When you've got to work a job and do a band its hard, so now our job is our band. It takes a long time though, you’ve just got slug it out. Ahren has been in the band for 10 years now, I’m going on two so I am fairly new but still I was doing other bands for another 8 years before that. You start off as an apprentice like any other job, then eventually things grow if you're doing the  right thing and making the right decisions then.”

Best food here?
“Nandos is better here, Australia cost way more and its a fast food thing. Australia has a better subway. I get the Italian BMT, with mayo and I always get all the salads. Food is cheaper here, but once you do the conversion it costs us a lot. You can’t just eat junk food all the time you do get sick.”

Shows you are looking most forward to?
“We are looking forward to London because its a bigger room and London always cool so, the next one is cologne and its a big one and sold out and last day of tour.

Who is the messiest on tour?
“The plot in you or Napoleon are the messiest, so we know not to annoy each other and just take care of our own stuff otherwise  we have these little fights.”

Any fights break out on tour or rowdy stories?
“We usually get along with most bands nothing major if something happens anyways. We all know how to treat each other and how each other works, some days someone will have an off day and you know just to leave them alone, it’s like living together so you get used to it. We are very close.”

Would just like to thank Dan Brown for giving me 11 minutes to do this short interview and the rest of the Amity guys. Thank you and great show.

Baby Godzilla + Zoax + Hooligan Collective LIVE @ Hatfield The Forum 5/12/14

A perfect breed of two brilliant bands, Baby Godzilla and Zoax, joined forces to hit up the road just before Christmas for a full run of show.
Joined at the Forum Hatfield, Hooligan Collective were the first band to open up the night.
Their hardcore/ punk influence sound was presently heard within their performance as the youngesters had a dated noise to them, with their performance taking to the floor space rather than the stage, the band tried to re live what old punk shows were about, getting the crowd as close as possible and moving along. With a much lengthened set, Hooligan Collective gave a visual performance, bouncing around in his glittering jacket, guitarist Dale swamped the lime light.

Bordering on from one energetic performance to Zoax who gave a whole new level of intensity, the night was sure to be heating up just in time. If you have never seen this band live before, then you are sure to be in for a treat with their most talked about frontman. Lead frontman Adam Carroll, decided that he belongs on the floor with the crowd, doing all kinds of shit to make sure that every single person was included.
Starting off, Adam roamed around the venue, having a little chat with everyone before he screamed into their faces, crossing paths with their shocked expressions which seemed to charge his charisma even more, plunging his microphone to dance around the room while capturing members of the audience in his waltz. The rest of the band who were left on stage, left no silence. Getting stuck in with bashful moments which complimented their vibrant loud, angry sound the band gave an astonishing performance that truly left the crowd in mutters of what they had just witnessed.

If that wasn’t enough then Baby Godzilla were on next to finally take over The Forum and leave your souls running out of your body. Known for their outrageous stage presence, the band wasted no time in getting stuck in, as the show seemed to take place on the floor rather than the stage. Not complaining, Baby Godzilla who claimed to describe themselves as "General extreme noise” certainly did live up to the expectation. With such a spacious room to cause havoc in, the band sent circles spinning, climbing onto the bar, interrupting conversations between friends, they are the band who literally don't give a fuck.

There is no word to describe that night other than complete and utter chaos, one of the best shows that Baby Godzilla have played, by making girls cry in the process of destroying themselves, Matt Reynolds dominated his angry howls, making sure everyone was shitting their pants while Jonny Hall got upfront and personal.
‘Powerboat Disaster’ ended the beaten night with gang vocals of the crowd cheering in in a bundle of madness, as exhausted screams let out one final whirl wind of noise before dropped to a halt.

TOP 10 EP’s of 2014

1. Creeper - Creeper
Listening to a whole EP at first glance and thinking, “I FUCKING WHAT TO SEE THIS BAND LIVE RIGHT NOW” is a rare occurrence, however with the first tune of Creeper’s self titled EP, this was my exact thought. Ex members from previous band have come together to create this hybrid punk band and honestly it’s the best thing to happen in 2014. Banging out this EP had to reach number one on my radar as every song is just so catchy and upbeat, it screams “PLAY ME AT A HOUSE SHOW” which luckily enough actually happened, ending the year with a great celebration.
2.Trash Boat - Look Alive
Saint Albans new comers, Trash Boat rep the UK’s pop punk scene with an EP that puts many albums to shame. The five-piece, who are relatively new to the scene have shown great capability of releasing four head banging songs, that will be sure to get you finger pointing live. There is no room for being mediocre here, as vocally Tobi Duncan produces incredible biting sounds while the band cover a high end energetic presence. As well as that, lyrically the band are top on my list with catchy choruses that aren’t just about relationships but broaden to a positive vibe.

3. Mind And Separation- Charnel House
The Sheffield quartet have returned with an outstanding melodic hardcore EP which literally just blew me away. M&S (No not the high street retailers) have exposed some solid sounding vocals which Travis fires out, as each scream is clearly heard and packed with passion that is deeply emotive.
Young at age, there is no trace found as their melodic sound is perfected to every last note and composed beautiful together, wrapping up a flawless EP.
4.Wallflower - Summer Daze
Another fresh band blowing straight in, earned their ranking at second place as their four tracked EP was an instant winner.
Packed with a Basement emo vibe, the quintet produce earnest music which is dominant in melodic value, keeping clean vocals that match their overall tone.
What really grips me to this band was their outstanding ability to produce such professional sounding music at such a young stage. Wallflower are ones to watch out for in 2015, expect great things.

5. Bloody Knees - Stitches
Not known to many faces, Bloody Knees have to be one of them bands that you simply just cant get enough of. With the release of Stitches this year, the band have buried themselves with darker themes and punky riffs that capture a nostalgic feel, you find comforting. You need to see this band live to capture their justice, as their sound is projected profoundly. ‘Daydream’ and ‘Stitches’ are two banger tracks which are sure to grab your immediate attention, packed with Bradley’s captivating vocals and a rough swaying feel, Bloody Knees are sure to keep you moving.
6. Elegies - Elegies
Another self titled EP banged out right at the very start of the year, another Sheffield locals, have made the top 10 with their fast cutting sent. ‘Exile’ and ‘Scars’ open and end the EP with each producing some of their finest work. A gracefully planted instrumental is layered in-between tracks to set the mood down, dropping in temperature before brought back up with howling screams that are matched with clean vibrations. From start to finish, this EP is sure to keep you on your toes, with their mastered sound taking a hold of your ear drums.
7.Water Canvas - At Least
A mixture of sounds are exposed with this EP, as the only way I can describe it is to be “a mixture of all the things I like.” Their sound is very ideal as for me they capture what a lot of current bands are doing but combining all elements into one track. Water Canvas have this mysterious sense when listening to them which gives you all kinds of reflexes that are calmingly enjoyable.
‘Memorial Drive’ is the first track on the EP, and without a doubt a favourite due its sentimental touch that leaves an implant on you.
8.Hopes - Wake Up
Brining you a non UK band, Hopes gain all the brownie points with me, from recreantly releasing their Wake Up EP, jam packed with five post-hardcore tracks that certainly do this modern world justice. The four-piece are smothered with layers of talent which are yet to be explored, as this EP is a gateway for their creative sound to be opened. Friction rubbed vocals are shouted onto of a solid build up of crashing sounds that make up each song to be distinct in flavour. A band and EP you don’t want to pass by.
9.Counting Days - The War of The Wolf
Surely an EP we have all been waiting for? Counting Days have lived up to their hype without even releasing any music, which just to happens to now follow it’s greatly repped reviews.
Packed with fast paced action, slugging riffs and breakdowns that make you want to loose your shit to, this EP really does hold everything for a heavier audience. Great things are expected from this band and with The War of The Wolf as living proof of this, it’s going to be hard to disappoint.
10.Acres- Solace
Finishing off the at number 10, where it started at the South Coast, Acres fill the slot with their enchanting melodic tune. 2014 has been a year of great EP’s which seem to have been thriving better than major albums, as Solace plays great tribute to the UK’s hardcore scene producing fresh grooves that are polished in vocal pitch, leaving no battered strain behind. Standing out from many other bands, Acres have adapted a clarion pressure to their music as both the vocals and instruments dominate each song, compliment the two, they work solemnly together.

Hopes - Wake up EP

The freshly picked punk, hardcore band Hopes from Liberec, Czech Republic have just released a brand new EP, Wake Up.
Building up their own established sound, the newly exposed band have created such a tight little collection of tracks which represent all their hard work.

Mastering a matured tone, ‘Step Out’ quickly introduces Wake Up to a new audience which then builds onto the second track, exploring highly texturised movements, embracing their influence of Terror and Stick To Your Guns. With their harden tone, the band do not sound new at all, as their sent is so concert that it screams experience.

Hopes don’t waste their time by producing something mediocre, as each song proves its worthy with another. You are definitely woken up by now, as their riveting sound captures you in an instant, filled with melodic twists and bouncy beats that gets your blood pumping through your veins.

‘Friends’ unites the album to a close with a punk edgy that is filled with influential style rhythms, by combining these all to one close, it strengthens the song as part of a solid album that is a great credit to the current hardcore scene of new waves.

Never Say Die TOUR @ o2 Islington London 5th November

Terror, Comeback Kid, Stick To Your Guns, Obey The Brave, More Than A Thousand, No Bragging Rights, Capsize

It’s that time of year again, early November welcomes back Europe's Never Say Die tour, as this year proves to thrash out the others. With a solidarity line up of America’s finest hardcore bands, this tour is sure to bring a main meal of pure carnage to the table.
Finishing off the UK tour with the London show at o2 Academy Islington on the 5th, brought down a packed crowd.

Smaller to the scene, Capsize opened this early evening with a monumental amount of energy, despite the small crowd. Scattered fans mimicked vocal chords which were spat in all directions while the band didn’t let anything come in their way of putting on a show.
Followed up by an equally appealing act, No Bragging Rights got a pumped up crowd as the night progressed, more and more bodies appeared, ready to bring on the mosh.

Less conserved energy was lazily escaped for More Than A Thousand, as their classical tone didn’t float as well with the crowd. Never the less, putting on a show which slipped with the lineup, the Portuguese band represented their talent hearty.

Edging deeper into the core, Obey The Brave took to the stage with their large fan-base greeting their roars accordingly. The band had a close interaction within every fan as they played exceptionally well by gaining the energy from the majority of the room. Loud and roaring their sound could be heard from beyond the venue, as the Montreal metal core band lived up to their much hyped expectation.

There was a slow change in the atmosphere as the top three bands were finally set to play, up first were Stick To Your Guns, a well cherished hardcore act that were known to every spirit. Their instant presence got the room spinning in circles as the formation changed, making room for a pit for fans to release their zest. Flying all over the floor, bodies collided with another in time to their hard edge movement reflected on stage, as vocalist Jesse Barnett gave an affirmative speech in-between each song, expressing the bands beliefs.
This then seemed to egg on more dancers to the pit as ‘We Still Believe’ and ‘Amber’ blasted on, ending their set way too short.

Keeping within the same pressure, Comeback Kid made their well greeted appearance, as more than half of the crowd appreciated their presence on stage. No need for introductions, friends of the hardcore genre dived straight into their set, plunging out their most known songs for the audience to repeat at the top of their lungs. Lasting slightly longer, their vigorous set seemed to be over before it started.
However this didn't stop a single soul from going absolutely ape shit on the floor, two stepping to their hearts content, connecting fully with the music being played, not a care was shredded that night as essentially it was a gig for hardcore lovers to come together and break lose.

Time pressed on, ahead of planned lists, Terror were finally discharged to tear apart Islington and get everyone jumping.
The keepers of the faith have finally returned to restore their morals onto the crowd as the pit opened up wider for more participants to join in, dashing all around the perimeter.
With such brutal migrations, the heavy beat downs got a bodily flow that somehow took over all senses, as you would find yourself moving along with it.
Insanely catchy, there was no escape from their capture, as Scott Vogel made sure that everyone was having a good time.
“THIS IS A HARDCORE SHOW, MAKE SURE YOU STEP ON SOMEONES HEAD” had been shouted every now and then, reminding the audience of what they were surrounded by.
With no need, the crowd were spinning in full rage, matched with the bands ruthless sound.

Not as preachy as expected, they kept their chat short, focusing on their music as well as thanking everyone for turning up, with Stu Mackay, former Your Demise member on stage for one final song.
If this didn’t get everyone moving then, I don’t know what would have. Ending the night with a war zone like remains, Never Say Die had done it once again.

Basement + Cloakroom + NewMoon 29/10/14 @ Electric Ballroom London

It’s only been two years since the quintet from Ipswich Basement have played a London show, since their announced hiatus in 2012. Playing what was thought to be as a last ever show at Camden’s Underworld, soon became a myth as a venue less than a breath away, The Electric Ballroom developed the base of the four dated tour.

Following similar support acts, the sold out London show dragged along Belgium's’ NewMoon to get the crowd  pumping.
Taking an early start, the dreamy indie vibes soon filled the packed venue as their instrumental explosion captured the crowds senses. More than half of their songs seems to be strained out noises rather than vocals, all emerging into one. Somehow this rare eruption worked perfectly, with the right amount of weight floating each way, as although their set did seem to go on forever, NewMoon proved to be an outstanding support act for Basement.

Gently pausing in-between breaks, the grand venue soon became filled with huddles of bodies emerging as dear friends and ex-members of old bands made an appearance including, Edd McRae (vocalist from Your Demise) and Charlie Holmes (Vocalist from Heart In Hand).

Main support act, Cloakroom pushed on to take the stage next, as the room fell silent once again.
Similar to NewMoon, Cloakroom produced a lingereing instrumental piece witch soothed your ears and soul, feeling yourself free to wonder along with the music.
With more of an indie inflection, the band filled their slot with a mixture of juxtaposing sounds that pleased the crowd as bodies slowly moved from side to side in time.

Time passed steadily as the build up of tension rose for Basement to make an appearance. When the clock had finally reached 9:20 on the dot, five familiar faces appeared within the mist of the orange lights, spotlighting each shadow.
Straight into ‘Whole’ the crowd greeted this with a plunge of flying figures bouncing in all directions.

Andrew Fisher’s vocals swept in, met with the hundreds of echo released by the audience, pelting with full expression. The crowd now fully pumped, the band decided to simmer down with a new track off their EP Further Sky, embarking their comeback.

There was a certain chilled out atmosphere at the gig which had seemed to be lost in many others, sure it was a well waited performance, yet everyone seemed to respect others in terms of going nuts. Not saying that the gig was totally calm, as various spots were causing massive havoc while the overall coverage seemed to be chilled out.

The band kept their energy flowing, absorbed by the crowds fuel, as they covered their most famously known tracks within the two albums, occasionally dipping into their new ones. Delighting the crowd with this mixture, screams of voices escaped their mouthes, as the band gave a passionate performance, before ending with a much loved favourite, ‘Crickets Throw Their Voice’.
This sent everyone in the room roaming for one last mosh.

For a band with such a high reputation and style, they have certainly done well to maintain this, two years later performing as if nothing had happened. Basement are more than just a band to most of their fans, and tonight very much proved that.

Bring Me The Horizon - Drown NEW MUSIC VIDEO

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lDOHx8Vg3c#t=27

Awaiting a year for the Bring Me The Horizons new music, and the sheffield fivesome have finally released one track as a taster to their new sound.

For starters the titled track 'Drown' gave great hope to their current fanbase as something that could maybe date back to their previous work, adding an heavier tone filled with breakdowns.
As their latest full length, Sempiternal; released last year, the change in the bands direction had already caused havoc with the diehard fans, loosing many along the way but also gaining more in return.

Despite the new change in Sempiternal, the album worked solidly as each track benefited the next, creating a unity of sounds that floated melodically as well as metal sounding with explosive breakdowns and piercing screams that actually suited Sykes's voice.

So with the release of 'Drown' the change seemed to have expanded deeper into this new style which BMTH have adapted, admittingly sticking to a softer, subtle noise.
Now seeing all five in suits immediately tells us that no shit is going to go down, because let's face it? It's a fucking suit.

A soft melodic interlude plays as the opening lyrics "What dosen't kill you, makes you wish you were dead." sounds a bit too You Me At Six influenced. The whole song takes on a soft, deeper tone as Sykes is singing for once and not found to let out a scream at all. Surprisingly, this is something people are happy wit. Personally, I feel like this works well, especially with the song being about his drug addiction, he has chosen to take a serious route rather than screaming a ranty rage. Because of this tone, the track is taken more seriously as the band show off their usual "I'm never ok" themes of being troubled and helplessly in a mess.

However I find myself liking the song for some reason, not quite sure if it's to do with the content or sound but it's catchy beat leaves you wanting to play it again and again, just to make sure that it's the same band you're listening to.

It comes to a shock to a lot of people as their judgemental looks and strong opinionated minds do not allow room for change for a band such as BMTH, which is a pretty damn shame. I mean who want's a band who just makes another album that sounds the same? Sure it's great if you're a massive fan and still stick in the Count Your Blessings days, but it's time to move on and accept the new change, you've got to give them credit for even trying.

But the band isn't the only choice for the change, remember that BMTH are signed to major record labels such as Sony, RAC and, Epitaph which all get a say in how their new sound should be.

So what do you think?

More Than Life LIVE @ Borderline London 19.10.14

Constantly on the road touring, More Than Life, have left the UK starved for two years without a headline show. It was the Sunday night of October 19th, when the quartet returned to London’s Borderline for a one off show.
Taking an early start to the night was Southampton’s locals, Creeper. An unfamiliar sound to the crowd, the band didn’t let this interrupt their punk rock vibe, as the lights dimmed and the Jeepers Creepers song took to an intro, the band appeared on centre stage blasting out their energetic presence. For an opening act, Creeper got a few heads bobbing capturing new fans instantly with their passionate connection they exposed.
Following another eminent act of the night was Nathan Detroit a Punk band from Trowbridge.
Halfway into the show, the bands guitarist decided to part ways leaving the four remaining members at a minus. Despite this, the band picked themselves up, gaining more attention form the crowd with their fast moving beats and bouncy actions, even those who weren't familiar with their sound found themselves moving along.
Before flying of to Australia the next day, More Than Life had gladly assembled, Up River to give the crowd one last warm up before their influx.
Similarly appealing to the current audience, the foursome instantly engaged all senses from the faces of everyone in the room. Unmasking their hardcore, bluesy sent soon spread filling the room with emotive screams. More known the crowd, deeper movement of bodies connecting and lips moving joined Up River, as their set proved worthy.

The floor was now filled with floods of bodies all hurled together, bounded by one band who were soon to play on stage. Deep red lights filled the stage where the current members stood, setting up for a special night of empathy.
Diving right into the bands news record, What’s Left of Me, came ‘Weight of The World’ a chillingly, gripping song that erupts passionate howls from every lyric that was amplified by the crowd. Intertwining with ‘Fear’ the older fans responded with chaotic bodies flying all over the floor, diving in mid air and screaming inches from James face. Working their way to ‘I’ve Lost Track of Everything’ taken from their famously known record Love Let Me Go, the collateral faces clustered together once again, in a community of cries.

Altering between their history with a few new tracks added, each song interacted a live audience as the non stop flow divers and mothers, kept the floor covered with a close line of unity.
Midway through ‘Do You Remember’ started and everyones faces dropped in tone, as the whole room was overslept with touching bodies learning towards the stage, screaming their hearts out to every line.

Where there were short breaks in the set a sweet, tranquil interlude was played to harmonise the crowd with their mournful blast.
Closing up the the night, vocalist James reached out, dedicating the last song to his mother who had just passed away. If the night wasn’t emotional enough it was about to get even more downbeat. Pushing all feeling aside a final basement of frames were clattered in a large group, grabbing onto each other or prancing around on stage. The set ended in a ferocity outcry, as they didn’t need an encore, More Than Life are just a band that just leaves you there in darkness, pulling yourself back
together after such an emotional journey, you feel yourself wanting to relive it all again.

Two years was definitely worth the wait to experience such a hectic night that seemed to last forever, More Than Life have left the London in scraps, still raging to come back for more.

Climates - Body Clocks album Review

GenreMetalcore/ Melodic
Length32:00

Rating
 8 / 10

Hitting the nail on the donkey for the first time is always a challenge, in fact for most bands, their first album is something they’d like to hide at the bottom of their record collection. But not for Lincoln’s finest metal core; Climates. Local to the UK, they have only be around for a couple of years, already known for their progressive metal sound. The five youngers have accomplished touring with highly creditable bands such as, Beartooth, Trapped Under Ice,  Counterparts, While She Sleeps and Bury Tomorrow.

Released this october, Body Clocks is the first full length, from Small Town Records who specialise in the growing music scene.
Making a sneaky appearance is ‘Leaves Of Legacy’, as gently it creeps in before Wes Thompson’s vocals wreck the room. Generically altering cleans to screams, Climates have intricately devised this within the track, making it subtle and transferable so that it goes unnoticed.

Following, ‘Heaven (Is Only In My Head)’ reaches our ears in a similar way, yet with more passion and tone that makes the song stand out as attacking. The tiny detail which goes into each song is certainly heard as its melodic side stands out to be the focus. The tempo change into a more hardcore structure, altering its tune by adding layers of complexity which skilled musicians die to master.

However not all is all dynamic, as relaxing breaks in the album are found with ‘In The Of Man’, ‘Worlds Away’ and ‘Sundown’ take on the delicate pitches of an atmospheric scent. Understanding why Climates have chosen to add such diversity to the album, as these songs do work; despite the simplicity, they have not taken a step back with the instrumental cadency.

‘Whole Hearted’ screams damage and suffering planted in Thompson’s screams, that are lyrically comforting as the song is filled with such rage of devotion, you find yourself compelled.

As the album progresses to a finish, the tracks get moderately hardy in framework, as elements are exploded of what the band are truly capable of.

Drawing a close to the sentimental journey, ‘Realist’ touches on heavy lyrically allusions which draw your soul, capturing your deepest senses, leaving you numb and motionless. The album as a whole certainly does its job from start to finish, hurling twist and turns along the way, Climates have traveled a long way and are still going!

Grayscale - Mindless Minds (Mini EP)

From the recent release of Thoughts That Linger back in the spring of this year, The 90's emo band from London, Grayscale have also just released a mini EP today, titled Mindless Minds consisting of three small tracks.

Distinguishing a featured sound on their past EP, the alternative band have certainty progressed their talent into a liver, upbeat trio of tracks found within the mini snippet.

Maturing in such a small space of time, this small EP caters directly to a modern audiences whilst still holding down classic sounds, as it is essentially, a breath of fresh air.

Beginning with 'Waterloo Estate', there is a clear change in sound which is a delighted surprise as the track starts of clam and easing, with a sweet tingly guitar riff accompanied by a soft drum beat, right until it hits a stone and the whole song revers back to their previous clattering of noises.

Their music isn't the only quirky thing about them, as chosen title tracks 'If That's a Bible, Where's My Camera' and 'Bait' probe their funky music tune.
Closing this small chapter with a punkier pressure highlighted by the guitars, which regain our focus to Grayscale's classical noise.

With just three small songs, Mindless Minds firmly teases us to their re-vamped style, that shows great development in their craftsmanship as musicians. Can't wait for an actual record or full tracked EP from these guys!

Thought emo was dead? Well with the release of Moose Blood's first ever debut full length record I'll keep You In Mind, From Time To Time, reboots us to the nostalgic homegrown sound of emo.

From a band who have only been around for two years, releasing two polished EP's and a split with Departures, the Canterbury foursome have produced a collection of tracks which reflect their own influences whilst adding their own personal touches.  If you're a current fan of Moose Blood or even a newbie, there is no doubt that you will love the band even more for producing such a comforting collection of sounds.

Introducing us with 'Cherry', the band draw us in with their softer side; an unusual start. The light
ballad style entwines with vocalist Eddy Brewerton's, as it lyrically reflects his recent marriage. This quiet style is then followed up by 'Always' which is a track released as a teaser weeks before. A song that lifts the mood right up and familiarises you with the Moving Home EP work of Moose Blood.

'I Hope You're Missing Me' and 'I Hope You're Miserable' which is the closing song both have very hard hitting punky vibe riffs which capture the likes of Balance And Composure, funnily enough have inspired them as much as Brand New. The duo stand out as headbangers, bringing a vibrant authenticity to their new vivid sound.

If you are a native to the band then you may have picked up on 'Boston' and 'Bukowski' being added with a revamped, edger tone that compliment the original releases as well as including them to slide perfectly with the album flow. Additionally 'Gum' takes Moose Blood's pristine voice found on their dated EP's by enumerating a natural modern emo aura.

Centre spotlight has been dedicated to the band as a whole, as Kyle, Glen and Mark all bond together to form a beautiful base for Brewerton to glide on smoothly. This is most evident in 'Pups' and 'Swim Down' with it's build up of a bridge, that heightens the current tension to a halt until the vocals sweep in.

Tying the knot, I'll keep You In Mind, From Time To Time awards its self alone with more focus on sound, yet still adding their famously well constructed lyrics, Moose Blood have produced a fresh yet nostalgic record that happily sits on the modern day shelves as a dated piece of art.
Without a doubt this record stands out to be in the top 10 released in 2014, alongside More Than Life, Gnarwolves, La Dispute and Basement.
It's not every day that your local UK band makes such a confounding album that supports the growing scene as well as providing a comfort blanket for the older generation.

Mind And Separation - Charnel House EP

Length23:40
Origin  Sheffield
Rating

Famously known for their solid music scene, Sheffield's own Mind And Separation are releasing their first ever titled EP, Charnel House this Autumn. Featuring 6 crafted melodies, which are a massive credit to the growing scene.

Slowly introducing us to the first track is Overcome, progressive combining melodic elements that are soon bound together by vocalist Travis, immersing his callous tone at you. Picking up the pace, with a faster moving beat increases the impact that you are faced with, while the song ends suddenly.

Regret shows off Travis's dominant hitting vocals as the song is tailored to his tone. Elements of post hardcore are heavily embedded as well as the elaborate melodic rhythms. Certainly one of the songs that stand out from the EP to me, its lyrical references are as powerful as the message, clear and repetitive to create even more effect. From the beginning of the song right down to its little harmonic ending, it strikes me greatly, as the detail of gradual tension is built carefully.

Striking you with such an intricate intro Stay True, starts off with soft breaks of vocals which are then accompanied by a powerful sound that constantly changes considerably. Not sticking to anything basic, Mind And Separation have added multiple alterations that disarray the generic structure, mixing things up for a modern audience to enjoy. The whole EP works so well because of this, no one song alone sounds like the other.

Drawing to a close, we are finally met with a somewhat peaceful interlude that takes all the endeavour off our ears, to enjoy a beautifully composed instrumental piece. Before Deserted slowly kicks in, dampening the mood for Travis's voice to lustre through. Carefully placed to ease you back into the bands complex sound, the melody is somewhat soothing until it the pace is picked up and once again we are restored back to a faster path. The strongest detail extracted come from the changing in pitch from calm to quiet, then from rigid to enraged then back to its simplest form where Travis's vocals end the song with such sentiment, the final drum beat adds to its weight.

Ending the whole EP with the longest song of 6 minutes, Grief plunges in straight away with impenetrable vocals that are then soon joined by a light melodic height.
As the track progresses we are opened to share the same journey as it constantly changes unexpectedly in tempo and pace, keeping you alert. Just when you think the song is coming to an end, the repetitive words are blared out into a gradual finale.

As a whole, Charnel House deserves a solid 9/10, 5* for all six tracks to follow up on each other smoothly, creating a solid first EP for themselves. Not just giving the audience generic music but altering it to suit their style, Mind And Separation, at such an early start have already earned their rank up there. If you are into Melodic Hardcore and have not yet heard of them, I highly recommend it, as they are a band that you will instantly like without a second listen. Hitting you straight up, with their mastered noise.

The EP will be out September 1st and free to download on their bandcamp!
Or you can catch two of their songs which are streamed on YouTube right now!
